Mannerheim was the honorary commander of the Uusimaa Dragoon Regiment.

The regiment had a long history, all the way from the wars of the 17th century. During the Russian reign the regiment had been the only cavalry regiment of Finland. It was disbanded in 1901. When the Finnish army was abolished, there were a great number of officers in the regiment who opposed to these oppressive measures.

In February 1918, the Uusimaa Dragoon Regiment was revived and Mannerheim was chosen their honorary commander
