Received his education in the Hamina Cadet School 1885-1892; in the Nicholas Academy of General Staff 1896-1899; in the University of Helsinki (teacher of physical education 1901, Master of Arts 1901).

Served in the Finnish army 1892-1903; in civil life 1903-1918. Chief of Rear Area in the War of Independence and Chief of Staff from 6 March till 6 May; Governor General of the City of Helsinki from 6 May till 1 June, 1918. Commander of 2nd Division in the army 1919.
