Kirkniemen kartano

The Parliament granted Mannerheim 12 million marks as a compensation of not being able to procure the ownership of the house in Kaivopuisto, Helsinki, they had donated to Mannerheim.

Mannerheim used this money to buy Kirkniemi mansion in Lohja, which was redecorated to be the residence of his retirement days. During his retirement, however, he mostly resided abroad, but whenever he came to Finland, he liked to stay in Kirkniemi. The mansion remained the property of Mannerheim Foundation till 1988, and has later been restored.
